Scale Microgrid Solutions is once again breaking down barriers for the distributed energy industry. Today, the company released their new “short form” Microgrid Services Agreement (MSA), an energy as a service contract (EaaS) that is 90% shorter than the industry standard.
“For years, contractual complexity has been one of the biggest barriers for commercial, industrial, and municipal customers interested in deploying distributed energy resources.” said Kristel Watson, Scale’s Chief Commercial Officer “Even for projects that were technically feasible and economically viable, with eager parties on both sides of the transaction, the time required to get comfortable with the standard contracts was often a deal breaker.”
Traditional commercial EaaS contracts are often 50+ pages in length and written in complicated legal language. As a result, contract execution may take upwards of two to three months - accompanied by substantial legal fees - following completion of the design and engineering phase of project development. By contrast, Scale’s breakthrough agreement is a 5-page document that can be easily understood, vetted, and executed in days.
“Over a year ago, our team set out to create the simplest contract in the energy industry. Instead of starting with an assumed industry standard, we started with a blank sheet of paper and worked with our customers and institutional partners to rethink what was ‘necessary’.” said Watson. ”The outcome of this really complicated process was an exceptionally simple document that will accelerate deployment of distributed energy resources throughout the country.”
