Gallaudet University, located in Washington, D.C., is a world-leading institution for learning, teaching, and research for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. As part of its sustainability mission, as well as its desire to reduce energy costs and provide the highest level of energy reliability and safety for its students, Gallaudet teamed with a local non-profit to request proposals for a campus microgrid.
Scale’s ambitious design, featuring combined heat and power (CHP), solar, and battery storage, was ultimately selected. In addition to providing cost savings and reduced emissions by capturing waste heat to meet campus heating and cooling needs, the CHP system provides an ultra-high level of reliability through a pioneering engineering approach that ensures a seamless transition to backup power during power outages. In another innovative twist, the campus solar arrays are used to generate bill savings for local residents through the District’s community solar program.
