MICROGRIDS FOR
TRIBAL LANDS
Scale's microgrids integrate renewable energy, storage, and dispatchable generation to provide energy savings, resilience, and sustainability. They work alongside utilities to reduce costs and can operate independently during outages, ensuring consistent power supply.
America's energy transition must include Tribal lands.
While Native Americans make up about 2% of the U.S. population, these communities face disproportionate challenges in accessing electricity. According to a 2022 report from the Department of Energy Office of Indian Energy, 16,805 Tribal homes remain unelectrified, primarily in the Southwest and Alaska. The disparities are stark: 21% of Navajo Nation homes and 35% of Hopi Indian Tribe homes lack electricity, compared to the national average of about 1%. America's energy transition must include Tribal lands to address these stark disparities.
Fortunately, there are solutions available to tackle this critical issue:
$0 down financing options and billions of dollars in federal grant money available.
We seamlessly incorporate renewable energy, energy storage, and dispatchable generation. The microgrid functions in parallel with the utility to provide energy savings. It also gives you the ability to enter island mode during grid outages to provide complete reliability and resiliency.
We provide your businesses and communities with ready-to-go energy access for the independence, resilience, and sustainability you need.
Scale's Microgrid Brings Energy Independence to Soboba Casino Resort
Scale will build and install a microgrid for the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians (Soboba) at its Soboba Casino Resort that will serve as both an economic asset for the tribe and an emergency cooling center in the event of a community-wide power outage.Soboba’s 474,000 square foot casino, hotel, and golf course will offset its power consumption from 1.5 MW of rooftop solar and a 6 MWh energy storage system with 24/7/365 on-site and remote monitoring by Scale.
In addition to designing the microgrid system for the facility’s specific needs, Scale’s development team secured funding from California’s Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) and the Direct Pay Investment Tax Credit for tribes to fund more than half of the project costs.
Energy Security + Energy Savings for the Tribal Nation
Scale Microgrids and NPower Link have developed a powerful partnership to bring energy access, resilience, and cost savings to Indian country. With Scale’s technical expertise and NPower’s extensive experience working with tribes, we will work together with you to find the best distributed energy solution for your community.

The Growing Need for Energy Resilience:
Is Your Business or Community Prepared?
While our focus is on empowering Tribal communities, the need for energy resilience is a growing concern across the nation. Many communities face challenges similar to those on Tribal lands, highlighting the broader importance of our work.
Importantly, our focus on building resilient, independent energy systems for Tribal nations addresses these challenges head-on. These solutions not only benefit Tribal lands but also provide a model for sustainable energy resilience that could be applied to vulnerable areas nationwide.
As we work to bring reliable power to Tribal lands, we're also developing expertise that can help other communities prepare for an increasingly unpredictable energy landscape. Whether you're on Tribal land or in a high-risk zone elsewhere, the question remains: Is your business or community ready for the energy challenges of tomorrow?
California's Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) Program: A Case Study
- Utilities can shut off power during high-risk weather to prevent wildfires
- Communities face 5 to 10 shutoff events annually, each lasting 2 to 5 days
- These shutdowns impact business operations and community health and safety
This situation mirrors challenges faced by many Tribal lands, where power interruptions can be frequent and prolonged. For Tribal communities, where energy access is often already limited, the impact of such outages can be even more severe.
