Matthew Van Horn
Project Manager
Matt grew up in Delaware where he attended the U of D receiving his Bachelor of
Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2004. In his professional career, Matt began
working as a field engineer for a large consulting firm, spending much of his time up and
down the east coast in various industrial settings. He then ventured into the world of
power generation spending 10 years in utility scale power plants. While working in
various roles at coal and natural gas fired plants, he picked up many of the skills that
serve him well today. Power plant life requires individuals to manage a wide variety of
issues across the electrical and mechanical spectrums in a high pace high stress
environment. Matt moved from engineering roles to operations and maintenance
management. Realizing it was time for a new challenge, he moved into the Public Utility
Sector as a project manager. While working as a contractor for a large utility in the
Northeast, he managed large transmission and substation rebuilds and upgrades. Before
arriving at Scale, he spent a short bit of time in the fuel cells industry working with a
manufacturer. Matt’s diverse background in power generation and the utility sector gives
him a unique view on the bright future of distributed energy. Matt still lives in the
“Small Wonder” that is Delaware and is an avid outdoor enthusiast. He loves taking his
family of five on long trips exploring our beautiful National Parks and occasionally
getting in (just a little) over his head on hikes in the wilderness.
