Primex

Located in California’s Central Valley, Primex is a fourth-generation grower, processor, and exporter of nuts and dried fruits, and it is the third-largest pistachio processor in the U.S.

Primex recently expanded their processing facility, but they faced multi-year delays when attempting to augment their utility service to meet the resulting 50% increase in peak electricity demand. As a result, they have had to rely on expensive temporary generators during harvest season.

Scale will eliminate the need for temporary generators by building a microgrid that includes solar and battery storage to meet a significant amount of year-round electricity demand along with low-emission generators required to meet peak demand during harvest season. This combination of cleaner and cheaper resources will reduce electricity costs and emissions from day one while ensuring resilient on-site electricity supply during utility grid outages.

The Primex Microgrid

The Primex microgrid will include 3 MW of solar, which will replace an older existing solar installation, along with 6.2 MWh of battery storage and four 1.2 MW generators. Scale will own and operate the microgrid under a microgrid service agreement (MSA), with 24/7/365 remote monitoring to ensure year-round reliability.

The MSA also eliminates up-front costs for Primex, replacing a large capital expense with a monthly service fee. Scale also secured a grant from the state’s Food Production Investment Program, which will help minimize the total costs of the system, reduce Primex’s monthly payments, and maximize their energy cost savings.
